Salvias

Salvias – May 2015 Talk by Del Smith

There are over 900 species of Salvias and they come in a wide variety of colours from white through shades of pink and red to blues and purples. They can be used as mass plantings or as a filler, as ground covers or taller specimens. Most Salvias are not fussy about soil types but must be well drained. The exception is blue bog sage which will tolerate very moist conditions and thrive. They prefer full sun to flower well. They don't need any special attention apart from cutting back usually in Autumn. They can be propagated from cuttings with roots attached. Some species usually bought as potted colour will self seed. Others will run and cause problems. Salvias are a versatile plant and well worth a try in your garden.
